Jana Nyberg

Performing with the Roseville Big Band in the Central Park band shell on July 4, 2000, Jana took a solo chorus on piano in "Mambo Jambo" and played a flute ride over the last chorus of "La Bamba." She also sang one verse, scatted another, and sang in the vocal chorus on "Jump, Jive, and Wail."

A 2000 graduate of Roseville Area High School (RAHS), Jana played flute in the RAHS Symphonic Band and the All-Conference Band. Her flute solo at the 2000 instrumental solo and ensemble festival was name best of site. She also played piano in the RAHS Jazz Band and Jazz Combo and flute in the Symphony Orchestra. Jana also sang alto in the RAHS Concert Choir.

Jana (along with Tahran Helmberger) can be heard singing on "Hektor's Last Stand" on the Hektor and the Gas Giants CD.

After a year at Luther College, Jana transferred to Bethel College, where she majored in instrumental music education with a minor in creative expression. Jana played piano and flute in Bethel's Jazz I ensemble and sang with both Jazz I and Jazz II. Jana also played principal flute in the Bethel College orchestra and wind ensemble and sometimes served on the chapel team.

Outside of college, Jana led the band for Northbridge Station Baptist Church in Lino Lakes.

After graduation, Jana taught in the Green Bay, Wisconsin, area for two years before returning to the Twin Cities.

She leads the Jana Nyberg Trio (trumpet, guitar, and Jana on vocal and flute) and the Jana Nyberg Group (which includes her brother Jake Nyberg). You can check her performance schedule and listen to samples from her CD at www.janajazz.com.
