Dave plays trumpet in the Liechtenstein Nein – A German Polka Band (since 2012) - and sings in the Hamline Church United Methodist chancel choir (since 2003). Dave also plays tenor trombone and occasionally brings both trumpet and trombone to a Roseville Big Band sit-in night.

While a student at Henry Sibley High School in Mendota Heights, Minnesota, he played in the symphonic band, stage band, concert orchestra, theatre pit orchestras, and marching band - each of them for three years. He also sang in the male chorus homeroom for three years.

At Hamline University (St. Paul, MN), Dave played in the concert band (4 years), jazz band (3 years), and theatre pit orchestra (1 year). These musical organizations were under the direction of Paul Pizner, who directed the Roseville Big Band in 1988 and 1989.
