David first performed with the Roseville Big Band on the August 1, 2006, concert in Central Park.

David has played jazz most of his life, starting in the Stillwater High School jazz band. He also played in the University of Minnesota-Duluth jazz ensemble and many combos in and after college.

He has performed with Prudence Johnson, Gary Raynor, and the late trumpeter Gene Adams.

David leads a jazz quintet called The Friday Project with Glen Peterson, Mike Wobig, Tom Heimerman and Carl Berger. They play the last Friday of every month at the Coffee Grounds on Hamline in St. Paul. Karen Dunn has sung with them since 2013.

David also plays in 7 Cats Swing, another group that also includes Roseville Big Band members Glen Peterson and Mike Wobig.
