Member during:

1995

Occupation:

Concordia College music teacher

Dick first rehearsed with the Roseville Big Band in April, 1994, and he filled in for us on numerous occasions until August, 1995, when he joined the band as lead trombonist.

Dick came to Concordia College in St. Paul in 1976 after teaching in the public schools of Mississippi and Missouri. He played trombone with many well-known musicians, among them Charlie Rich, Olivia Newton-John, Claude Thornhill, Les and Larry Elgart, Bob Hope, Red Skelton, and with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. As chair of the fine arts division at Concordia, he touched many lives, especially his band students. Dr. Robert Holst, president of Concordia, commented, "Prof. NOrris was a holistic teacher. His studnets dind't just learn music. They learned to know each other and support each other."

Dick was born March 14, 1936, in Harrisburg, Illinois. He died December 19, 1995, in St. Paul. His friends and family established the Richard E. Norris Scholarship Endowment Fund in his honor, to provide financial assistance to a Concordia College student enrolled in the band program. The Roseville Big Band donated to the fund in Dick's memory.
