On Independence Day 1984, Kathy Olsen sang "South of the Border" with the Roseville Big Band (then known as the Roseville Jazz Ensemble) at the new band shell on the shore of Lake Bennett in Roseville's Central Park. The innovative design of the shell was the winner in a design competition sponsored by the Roseville Parks and Recreation department.
The audience sat on the terraced grassy slope where, a few years earlier, mature oak trees were ripped up by a tornado that swept through Roseville.
