Rick is a trombonist and vocalist with a BA in Music, Instrumental and Vocal, and a Minnesota teaching certificate from the University of Minnesota, Morris. His other degrees include a Master of Education Curriculum and Instruction from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, and a Master of Science Education Technology from Minnesota State University, Mankato.
From 1998 through 2021, Rick was a music specialist in the Bloomington Public Schools, teaching all 5th grade students to play an instrument. As the Professional Learning Community Lead (2016-2021) he led and coached the 5th grade instrumental music staff in ISD #271 in developing the goals and assessments for the school year. He currently teaches middle school computer science at Valley View Middle School.

Rick first led the Roseville Big Band on the June 29, 2024, concert at The Rog in Central Park.
