Al rehearsed with the band the previous week at St. Michael's church. Al plays tenor sax in rehearsal.

Al plays alto, tenor, and baritone sax, in addition to clarinet.

He plays in the Johnny Owen Band and subs in the Nova Band, the Stan Bann Big Band, and the River City Jazz Orchestra.

Before retiring, Al was a high school band director in St. Paul for 29 years. Prior to moving to the Twin Cities, Al taught band two years in Napoleon, North Dakota, and four years in Washburn, North Dakota.

While he lived in Minot, North Dakota, his quartet, "The Playboys" (sax, piano, bass, and drums), performed in clubs in Minot and Bismark, North Dakota.
